Does your kid really need braces?

By admin October 13, 2017

This is actually a question where nobody found out the answer. Braces are an expensive and long-term investment even though they align crowded and crooked teeth and improves the dental health of your child.

Sometimes the doctors might recommend children to wear braces even though it looks normal to people. So the parents will hesitate to spend a huge amount just to make a small change in the position of the teeth. The dentists may ask the child to continue wearing the braces for at least two years. This is followed by retainers for another two years which is used to keep the teeth in the current position. If you hesitate to wear the retainers, your teeth can return back to its previous position. Sometimes the dentists may also recommend you to wear a palate expander which is used to make the mouth wider and provide more room for your teeth.

Some children will have crowded teeth either in the upper or lower position. So for making a small change in the position, the parents will have to spend a huge amount. Some parents will hesitate to proceed because of the high price range. Some people cannot afford this high amount and will drop it down. Others will proceed with the installation of the braces but most kids will not have the patience to continue wearing them for around 5 years. This will make them feel uncomfortable and will definitely back off.

According to the national Institutes of health, most of the misaligned bites seen in children are so minor that people won’t even notice them. So most of the parents will not be very interested in giving their children this costly treatment to make just a small change. Around 4 million children in the US and Canada under the age of 18 wear different kinds of braces.
Overcrowding is the common problem observed in children. Severe overcrowding will improve on its own when the child grows to an adult. The treatment can be done for the teens and so there is no harm in waiting for the child to grow up till 20. Still, if you don’t find any progress you can very well go for the treatment which is what all the parents do nowadays.

Open bite is another form of malocclusion which is found in children and this happens when the front teeth don’t come out together when the child bites down. So usually the doctors will recommend the children to get the treatment only after losing all their milk teeth. Another problem is the overbite which is also known as buck teeth. This is actually a skeletal deformity and is treated with many external devices. If it is just a small issue seen in the children then it is always better to wait until the child grows till 20.
