Invisalign® is a revolutionary product in orthodontics for being the first-ever clear aligner. As the name implies, Invisalign® is a virtually invisible orthodontic device used to straighten teeth. Invented in 1997 by Align Technology, Invisalign® got approval from the Food and Drug Administration in 1998. From then on, the number of users has already grown to reach millions.

How does Invisalign® work?

Invisalign® is made out of BPA-free plastic and is worn like a mouth guard over the teeth. Each aligner is custom-made specifically for each patient. The aligners are made using a computerized model of the patient’s teeth and are based on the treatment plan made by the doctor. The current position of the teeth as well as their anticipated movement for the next couple of weeks are considered in making the treatment plan. The aligners will help move your teeth into place, little by little.

Each stage of the treatment will last for about two weeks. For each stage, a new set of aligners will be made. The entire treatment is estimated to take around a year, the same length of time as using braces.

Why should I use Invisalign® instead of conventional dental braces?

Invisalign® is the perfect alternative to braces. More and more people are choosing Invisalign® because it has proven to be as effective as braces in straightening teeth without dealing with the discomfort, hassle and pain that often comes with wearing braces.

Invisalign®’s aligners are almost invisible and are therefore more aesthetically pleasing than braces. Invisalign® allows patients to straighten their teeth without letting the world know about it. This rings especially true for adult patients who might feel awkward with having brackets and wires on their teeth at that stage in their lives.

The wires and brackets from metal braces have the tendency to stab, scrape or get snagged on the gums, the walls of the mouth and even the tongue. This often results to small wounds or sores. Invisalign®, on the other hand, is made out of smooth plastic that will not cause these problems.

The aligners also allow for easy cleaning because they can be easily removed. It takes more effort to brush and floss teeth with braces. Special kinds of brushes may even be needed to get in between the wires and brackets.

With Invisalign®, you can eat the same food that you used to eat before you got them. With braces though, you need to avoid eating food that can cause the brackets to get dislodged or the wires to get crooked. Food that can get stuck in the braces should also be avoided.

How do I use Invisalign®?

It is very easy to use Invisalign® but it requires discipline. Just pop them in but make sure to wear them all the time, ideally for around 20 to 22 hours each day. You should only take them off when you brush your teeth and whenever you eat or drink (anything except water) to avoid getting food particles on it and prevent staining. Chewing gum may also damage your aligners.

Clean the aligner trays each time you brush your teeth but do not use mouthwash or toothpaste to do it. You may use soap and toothbrush. You will be wearing a new set of aligners every two weeks. Get regular checkups with your doctor. These are usually scheduled every six weeks.
